A place renowned for its magical beauty and bewildering diversity, home to some 165 tribes speaking a wide variety of languages, the North East India is one of Asia's last great natural and anthropological sanctuaries. But it's also a region which has been ravaged by conflicts, insurgency and poor infrastructure. The World Bank describes conditions in the region as a low-level equilibrium of poverty, non-development, civil conflict and lack of faith in political leadership. Moreover, the region remains isolated from the rest of the country and has not been able to attract investors or produce skilled labour and entrepreneurial resources.
The most affected has been the youth of the region who had to either migrate to other parts of the country in search of livelihood or wait for an opportunity to come their way. This is a big loss of valuable skills to the region.
Can this potential be tapped by creating economic and socially inclusive development strategies?
With fertile land and water resources, vast potential in horticulture, handloom and handicrafts and unmatched natural beauty the NE region offers a perfect template for development. With the region lagging behind the rest of India in terms of economic and social indicators, unless it leapfrogs, it will not be able to create enough opportunities for its youth.
Adhyaya's mission is to surface and nurture the potential of North East India's youth and help establish an enabling ecosystem for funnelling their energy for a better and peaceful region.
